Core Value

Ethical Leadership

Aspire to inspire by thinking beyond compliance — prioritising people-potential and human flourishing.

Most organisations have a set of documented ethical standards. But whatever behaviour comes out of the leaders of an organisation represents the real ethics of that organisation. In search and rescue — where people volunteer their time and risk their safety — leadership conduct is the culture.

Leadership is not about control; it is about empowerment. When leadership is rooted in humility, empowerment and trust, it produces stronger teams, higher engagement, better retention, and a lasting operational impact.

The ethical leader

  • Holds themselves to a higher ethical standard and does not engage in harmful behaviour.
  • Expects a stated minimum from the team, and inspires — without force — toward a higher standard.
  • Self-reflects on their own actions, inaction, mistakes and successes.
  • Is accountable, admits mistakes, takes self-corrective action, and wants growth for themselves and their people.
  • Prioritises non-harmful solutions rather than punishment: eliminate the behaviour, not the person.
  • Prioritises self-accountability over self-preservation, and does not act out of fear of looking bad to superiors.
  • Creates a psychologically safe environment and expects healthy conduct from everyone.
  • Never attacks subordinates — subtly, covertly or overtly — even when their ego is threatened.
  • Controls their own emotions and is not impulsive.
  • Delegates tasks, shares authority, and gives managers real autonomy. Does not micromanage.
  • Allows mistakes to be made, understood and learned from, without creating panic or aversion to error.
  • Genuinely wants to advance and up-skill their people.

Where it shows up

Ethical leadership is visible in how mistakes are handled at the dock, how advancement decisions are justified, how complaints are received, whether rules are applied consistently to paid staff and volunteers alike, and whether the organisation is honest about its own failures.
