Necessary Questions in SAR

Human Factors & Organizational Development

  • How do we create healthy teams and ethical leadership?
  • How do we heal and prevent toxic teams & leadership?
  • What pitfalls do SAR teams/organizations make — and how do we prevent them?

Training and Operations

  • How can training be improved? What training do we need? How do we prevent diluted training?
  • How can we develop constructive standards?
  • How do we elevate the rigor and timeliness of up-skilling, certification and competency?

Governance, Regulation, Legal Status, Human Rights

  • Who is responsible for supporting SAR — financially, educationally, psychosocially, operationally?
  • What are the pros and cons of paid vs. unpaid business models?
  • Are volunteers, in fact, already equivalent to employees?
  • Should volunteers have equal rights and protections as employees?

Origin Story

The phrase "the spirit of SAR" was coined in a 2019 conference submission about the need for more fair, inclusive, ethical, opportunity-building and healthy work environments in water search & rescue. SoS was born from the opposition of the desire to serve in maritime SAR — professionally — and the paradoxically unnecessary barriers to entry and retention in the industry at large.

"Into the gates of hell we ride. Not for the fame or the glory. But for the one who called out for help."— Unknown

"SoS" — The Name

The Spirit of SAR (SoS) compass logo

SoS is symbolic of The Spirit of SAR while pointing to SOS — the globally-recognized distress signal. It's fundamentally about answering that call, and what it takes to achieve it: in heart, in mind, from teams, leadership, top-to-ground management, policy makers, and governments.
