About the poem
Written circa 2001–2009 and finalised in 2009, “Snow Fall” pictures a life lived between two vocations: the explorer's outward gaze — sea, sky and the heavens beyond — and the guardian's inward vigil, waiting for the moment the sea rages again. The winter sea below the cabin is both invitation and warning; the watch never truly ends, but it is kept in warmth and in company.
The closing stanza is the quiet centre of the poem: vigilance is sustainable only when it is shared. For SoS, that is more than sentiment — it is the human factor behind crew endurance, readiness and wellbeing.
